NEWSFEED: 4 Mar 2011

It’s the weekend! Woot! But, before we head there, the news:

  • Dr M rejects the notion that Malays are also immigrants — saying that people of Arab, Indian, or Indonesian origin become constitutional Malays through assimilation. Hang on. Hasn’t he just proved the idea that Malays are a people with a migrant ancestry? (The Malaysian Insider)
  • Deputy PM Muhyiddin Yassin: “Stop complaining, poor Sabahans! You’re not starving!” (“Also, yes, actually the BN government has done a poor job in Sabah.”) (Free Malaysia Today)
  • Interesting twist in the “religious conversion of minors” issue: the Penang Islamic Religious Department has reversed the conversion to Islam of a 17-year-old girl, saying that a guardian’s consent was necessary. (The Star)
  • A national art school in Keningau, Sabah? Sokong! (Daily Express)
  • Facebook interactions are cited as primary evidence in 1 in 5 divorce cases in the US. It doesn’t take much for strained relationships to result in online affairs. (ZDNet)
  • The satellite photos that sparked the protests in Bahrain, comparing ordinary villages with the massive palaces of rich cronies. More difficult to do this sorta Google Earth comparisons for Malaysia, though. Too much cloud cover + jungle. (Business Insider)
  • With homebrewing equipment bought out of their own pockets, the Obamas have pulled off another first: they’ve brewed beer at the White House. Will we see White House brand Honey Ale at liquor stores? (Obama Foodorama)
  • Baby dolphins are dying off in the Gulf of Mexico. Experts say that the BP oil spill is “a factor that we need to consider”. Duh! (National Geographic)
  • Annals of education: Northwestern University’s psychology department helped along its students’ understanding of human sexuality with something unusual: a live demonstration of orgasm. (The Daily Beast)
  • Why the iPad 2, and its Smart Cover protective case, is a game-changer — not for design, but for aggressive marketing strategy. “It’s a plastic cover with a magnet on it, people.” (Wired)
  • We previously heard news about the solar system’s new 9th planet, Tyche. But just where in space is it, actually? (Ars Technica)
  • An illuminating essay on the citizen journalism: its history (from the Rodney King video to the present) and where it’s going. (Mediactive)
